Your church name can be one of two things - an invitation or a roadblock. Of course, we all prefer the first. But the thought of re-examining a church name or making a change can be daunting.

"In real life, unlike in Shakespeare, the sweetness of the rose depends upon the name it bears. Things are not only what they are. They are, in very important respects, what they seem to be."
-Hubert Humphrey

The name of your church can be one of two things - an invitation or a roadblock. Of course we all prefer the first. But the thought of re-examining a church name or making a change can be daunting. Understandably so. Church names often carry loads of history, personal ties and emotion with them.

It can be hard when you're “in the trenches” to see what’s happening above ground. Your church name might feel just fine to you. Quite comfortable actually, like your favorite sweatshirt. But here’s the thing - it’s not for you. It’s primarily for the folks who don’t know you ... yet.

Here are some things to consider:

  • Does your church name tell part of your story?
  • Is it representative of who you are today?
  • Are there natural barriers to your name?
  • Are there parts of the name that might be true but not name-worthy?
  • Does it speak directly to those you hope to connect with?
  • Would it incite conversation or squelch it?

Here are some churches that have waded through the name change waters with Fishhook. Each one had its own reasons for the change, and a unique process and outcome. In the next few weeks, we’ll share some of their stories - stay tuned!
