If you're a communications professional -- managing everything from your church's overall communications strategy to the community outreach direct mail effort to the weekly bulletin -- my guess is you try to stay on top of things. Keep track of details. Make deadlines. But sometimes things don't always go according to plan...

My typical mode of operation – my Plan A, if you will – is always this: I try to be organized, I like to stay on top of details and deadlines, and I work hard to plan ahead so my work at Fishhook is “just right” for my clients.

If you’re a communications professional – managing everything from your church’s overall communications strategy to the community outreach direct mail effort to the weekly bulletin – my guess is you try to operate in a similar way. So you can imagine my anxiety level when I recently found myself writing an important communications assessment for a client the day before it was due! And in fact, I was writing a significant chunk of it after midnight (so technically I was working on it the day it was due!).

My Plan A? I would have worked at least several days in advance on this document. And I might have specifically prayed over my planning and writing for this church client. But I would have found huge comfort in knowing that I was working well in advance of the due date.

Plan A was not in the cards this time (a full work schedule and family commitments had me running hard). And I’m glad. Because instead, God swooped in and forced me to go to Plan B. (Not a comfortable spot for me!) So there I was late one evening. I was planning and writing away for this client … AND I was praying the entire time. I knew I needed the Lord to bless my effort. And I was determined to give him the glory as a result.

And so here I am … giving him the glory for Plan B. The Lord worked through me that night. And the next day, we presented the document to our client. They were blessed and challenged by our efforts. And so was our team – especially me! While I’ll never recommend waiting to the last minute to complete important projects, I do recommend the prayer that goes up when you’re desperate and completely dependent on Him to pull you through. I’ll take that Plan B over MY Plan A any day!
