Communication isn’t always easy, but it should always be clear. As the Church, we must be intentional about the language we use and the platforms we choose, especially in an increasingly digital world. In the spirit of being real and authentic, we must also clearly communicate!
Church comms should use welcoming, clear and accessible messaging to share with others. If our mission is to reach everyone, why would we overcomplicate our message or unintentionally create barriers? Simplicity isn’t dumbing things down … it’s removing friction so people can engage more easily with your church and its incredible ministries.
The words we choose matter. Insider church language may resonate with pastors or long-time believers, but it can alienate people who are new to faith or aren’t sure they belong quite yet.
In today’s fast-paced, content-saturated culture, people scroll past anything that feels confusing, exclusive or overly complicated. Clear language helps your message break through the noise.
A helpful comparison: think of church communication like airport signage. If every airport used a different phrase for “baggage claim,” travelers would be lost. In the same way, consistent, familiar language helps people know where to go and what to expect.
When writing a post, email or ad, think about the person in your life who’s least likely to attend church. What would make sense to them? What would feel inviting (instead of intimidating)? Start there!
As we make our way through 2026, digital marketing is no longer optional for churches. With that said, every platform or tool isn’t right for every audience.
Some ministries may thrive through Instagram reels, TikTok and text messaging. Others may still rely heavily on email, printed materials or Sunday announcements. Both can be effective when they’re used intentionally. Which is why it’s important to know your audience and purposefully plan with them in mind!
The goal of digital ministry isn’t to chase every new platform or stay stuck in old habits. We’re to meet people where they already are. Strong church communications today often include:
Balance matters, and innovation should provide clarity, not compete with it.
Great church communicators advocate for accessibility. That means encouraging creativity while also asking:
Asking these questions helps teams find the sweet spot between creativity, technology and simplicity.
We encourage you to continue serving your community and strengthening your church’s impact in a digital world. Keep it simple. And keep moving forward!
