Leading with Hope: Encouragement and Resources for Church Leaders Feeling Overwhelmed

Written by Aimee Cottle | September 25, 2025

As I sit down to write, the world outside feels heavy. There is chaos, pain, hurt people hurting people, division and news headline after headline that can leave me feeling like there is no hope.

And yet, this morning I walked into church to find a group of people who were smiling, pleasant, calm and encouraging. I felt deep and authentic worship fill the sanctuary. I listened as our pastors encouraged us to stay present and lean into love. And I walked out feeling like I had taken a full, rejuvenating breath.

People need this.

They need space to connect to the Holy One. They need to be reminded that they are created with and for meaningful purpose. They need the connection to other people who will see them and value them. They need church.

We know leading your congregations and communities feels heavy. We know you’re continuing to show up day after day to help other people carry the heavy things while also carrying your own pain and questions.

But please hear and believe that you were placed in your position for a reason. Don’t give up. Don’t lose hope. Fight the urge to get swept into the headlines and the negativity swirling around us. Instead, abide in Him and He will (without question) show you the next right step to take.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed please know we see you and you are not alone. Who you are and the work you do matter so much.

In case you need a little help knowing how to stay grounded and find rest, here are a few free resources we’ve created over the years:

Let’s keep leading people to the heart of Jesus. Let’s keep pointing our communities to the hope and peace that only He can provide. Let’s keep showing up for each other.

Let’s keep doing the next right thing even if the whole picture isn’t clear.

We’ll leave you with this blessing, friends:

“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.” - Numbers 6:24-26
