Writing is both a natural talent and a skill that can be developed. Now that we’ve discussed how to start a blog on your website and how to go about writing content that connects with your audience, let’s take a look at how you can improve the writing you do for your blog.

  1. Be intentional
    • When it comes to improving your writing, one of the most important steps is to want to improve your writing. If you’re constantly writing content without any intention of growing your ability, you may find yourself stuck at the same level you started. Even if you are a good writer, try to be open to improving and learning.
  2. Read
    • Find a couple blogs that interest you and read them regularly. Pay attention to exactly what it is that you enjoy. Is it the way it’s written? The style? The format? Is it story-driven? Does the writer use analogies well? Take notes on what you do and don’t like.
  3. Read about writing
    • Millions of books and articles have been written about writing. What's your favorite? Find some that can be helpful to your process and style of writing. This type of material can be used to learn, to reference while you’re writing or even to ignite inspiration. Joining or hosting a writer's group can also be a great way to find and share resources.
  4. Practice writing
    • Just keep doing it. Once in a while, give yourself time to write when you don’t have a deadline or even a topic in mind. Try a little practice without pressure. Or write in a journal. Eliminating the pressure behind writing can make it more enjoyable and give you a chance to grow in your confidence.
  5. Get a second opinion
    • Allow time in your workflow schedule, so a proofreader can be involved. Build a proofreading relationship with a team member or trusted volunteer. Listen to their opinions and learn from what they have to say about your writing. Always be open to becoming a better writer.

Your message matters. Keep growing and learning, so you can help connect your message with those who need it most!
