You can always come to Jesus and find rest for your soul.

In trying times, during seasons of discouragement, when you’re craving community but aren’t feeling like you have it around – always remember that you can come to Jesus. Another name used in the Bible for Jesus is Emmanuel. We hear this name often around Christmastime, as we reflect on the birth of Jesus and remember “God With Us.”

And so, find some encouragement today by these words spoken by Emmanuel Himself in Matthew 11:28-30…

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

This passage of Scripture is a go-to for tired, weary, worn-out believers. Even though Jesus spoke these words years ago, they still can serve as an encouragement for us today. Notice of the first phrase of these well-known verses. Three short words that serve as an invitation to life and peace ... “Come to me.”

Here, Jesus is showing His authority as part of the Trinity. He is not driving people away, forcing us to go here or there, or sending us on a wild goose chase. He’s declaring His equality with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit. And with that authority, Jesus is calling us to Himself. Jesus is inviting us to intimacy with Him. We can draw near to Him with confidence, knowing that He is a gentle, personal God who has rest in store for us and good gifts to give us.

Take this paraphrase from The Message with you today. Whatever life throws your way – at work, with your family, during your commute, as you serve and lead – know that Emmanuel is extending an invitation to you, calling you to come to Him. Today and every day, find rest for your soul in Jesus.

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
