Here are 10 key questions you can answer to make sure your writing is on point!

In a church setting, there is such a variety of content to be written!

From key messaging with a pastor, to a video script, to content for a print piece, to web or social media content, chances are you're organizing many kinds of content for a variety of mediums.

So what writing assignment is next up on your to-do list?

As you're getting started, consider these 10 key questions. You can ask yourself, or others on your team, these questions as you're writing, editing or proofing all kinds of content. They'll help ensure your message is as strategic, creative and compelling as possible.

  1. Who is this content intended for? (Be as specific as possible. Consider this audience as you are writing.)
  2. What might this audience be thinking or feeling before and during reading?
  3. What type of language or tone should be used?
  4. Is there a compelling story you can leverage to connect, inspire or move your audience?
  5. Is there a photo or graphic you can use to enhance this content?
  6. What does this audience NEED to know? What is critical information?
  7. What is your audience expecting with this content? Or, what aren't they expecting? (There are times to give people exactly what they are expecting. Other times, give them what they aren't expecting to add intrigue and interest.)
  8. Have you given a next step? (In other words, have you asked people to respond or act in any way? Is there anywhere else you can point people to take a next step or learn more?)
  9. Can you communicate this message effectively in half the words you are currently using? (Always aim to streamline or simplify, when possible.)
  10. Are you using language that the "lowest common denominator" will understand? Your writing should be approachable to a first-time guest or someone unfamiliar with your church.
