A question came from the back of the room ...

Recently, I had the opportunity to present a workshop at the National Association of Church Business Administration's annual conference. My workshop, “Seven Deadly Sins of Church Communications,” outlined what we have learned in our work with churches of all sizes, denominations, leadership structures and locales. I presented the seven sins (common ailments) and six remedies for communications enhancement.

In my workshop, I made a strong case that because Americans live in a message-saturated culture, every church should have a centralized communications function to facilitate communications discussions, decisions, planning and publishing.

During my question-and-answer period, a question came from the back of the room:

“In our church, people believe that every ministry area should take responsibility to get their own communications out. But what we need is someone to take the lead and be responsible. How do I (as the business administrator) help lead a discussion for change?"

I surprised myself as I heard the bold answer leave my lips. Listen here. (It's only 3.5 minutes.)

What about your church? How are your vision and key priorities being communicated? How do ministries get their word out? Who decides what gets top billing, where and how? Are there intentional messaging conversations taking place among leaders, or does tons of stuff just get pushed out to the people in the pews?

These are important conversations to have at your church. It's time for you to be bold!

To help equip you for some of these important conversations, we recommend attending the upcoming ALIGNMENT CONFERENCE in Indianapolis on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012. Leah, Lindsay and I will be speaking and will be sharing more bold ideas and comments! Hope to see you there!
