Abiding with Jesus this holiday season: A Christmas rhythm for healthy hearts and holy leadership

There’s something about Christmas lights that makes us pause for a second. Maybe it’s the soft glow that cuts through the dark or the quiet wonder that sneaks in when you’re standing there looking at them. It even brings some nostalgia of remembering Christmas' past. Every December we’re surrounded by these twinkling lights and reminded that Jesus came to be the Light.

But let’s be honest. For many church leaders this season can feel like anything but peaceful or bright. The pace picks up, the lists get longer and the idea of “abiding” sounds nice ... but also kind of impossible.

At Fishhook, we get it. We’ve had Christmas seasons filled with last-minute website edits, social media designs and “just one more email before the candlelight service.” It’s easy to get caught up in doing for Jesus instead of being with Him.

But healthy leadership begins in abiding in His presence.

The miracle of Christmas started in a quiet moment before the angels sang or the shepherds ran. Mary said yes. She opened her heart to the presence of God. And everything changed.

Encouragement as you Abide

“Abide in me, and I in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine.”
John 15:4

“Mary responded, ‘I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.’”
Luke 1:38

Space and Time for Reflection

The invitation of Advent is pretty simple, even if it’s hard to live out: slow down enough to notice that Jesus is near.

Before you pour out for your church, your team or your family, let Him fill you again. Healthy leadership starts with a healthy heart. And a healthy heart starts by abiding in Jesus.

So maybe this week you take five minutes in your car before walking into work. Maybe you light a candle at night after the house finally gets quiet. Maybe you just sit still and breathe.

You don’t have to perform for Jesus. He’s already here. Just be with Him.

Questions for Reflection

  • What helps you slow your heart and notice Jesus’ presence during this season?

  • What would it look like to lead from abiding instead of achieving this week?

A Prayer for Today

Jesus,

As I step into this Christmas season, help me not to rush past you. Remind me that you are here ... present, patient and kind. Teach me to rest in your love so that everything I do comes from being with you first.

Amen.
