Looking for a few ideas to recognize those serving at your church? We have a few strategies to help you give them the volunteer spotlight.

When it comes to running a ministry, volunteers are one of the key ingredients in ensuring a thriving operation. They are the unsung heroes of the church, freely giving of a precious and nonrenewable resource - time.

Many volunteers give of their time because of a deep passion for the cause; they find fulfillment in contributing to something bigger than themselves. Though the work they do can be a reward in itself, going the extra mile by recognizing their efforts will both sustain them and encourage them to keep going!

Show the spotlight on your volunteer team and express gratitude for all they do and who they are:

Discover their Favorites…

Consider sharing a fun inventory with your volunteers to discover some of their favorite things. Is there a candy bar/snack that they enjoy? Maybe you could surprise them with their favorite coffee drink on occasion?

Keep the inventory in an accessible and visible spot, so that when your volunteer goes above and beyond, you can surprise them with something you know they’ll enjoy.

Write a Thank You Note…

In this new age of all things digital, expressing written thanks to a volunteer could be the exact form of encouragement needed. Plan on developing a regular rhythm of writing one or two thank you notes weekly/bi-weekly.

Block 5-10 recurring minutes on your calendar and take the time each week to reflect on your volunteers and think specifically about how you might thank them. Add a stamp, and surprise them with some old-fashioned snail mail. If the occasion calls for it, maybe a gift card gets added as an extra bonus!

Invite and Implement Their Ideas…

Sometimes what speaks the most to a volunteer is simply asking for their opinion or advice and then implementing it. When they can be invited to be part of a solution to something, that can speak tremendous value to them.

Think about what could be improved in your ministry area. Where might you invite a trusted volunteer to help you brainstorm potential solutions? The solution you’ve been searching for may be waiting for you amongst your very own volunteer team.

The Thought Does Count!

Recognizing your volunteers can be a rewarding experience for both the giver and receiver, and there are many ways to do it! Above all else, find what works best for you, is most meaningful to your volunteers, and be consistent in your practice of expressing thanks.
