Ministry happens through many people with various gifts, roles and callings. Let’s take time to thank and encourage them.
I was recently talking with a long-time church communications staff member who was minimizing her role because she has never been to seminary and isn't ordained. I had to pause our conversation.
I told her how incredibly grateful and respectful I am of pastors - for the men and women who faithfully shepherd, teach and lead our churches.
And then I reminded her: Your communications role is a calling as well. You are called by God to this role and this church. You and your work matter.
I continued: Through your work, you help your church share its unique story and ministry with others. You invite people in, help them connect and make it easier for them to take their next steps to learn and grow with Jesus and others.
And that's significant ministry.
Sharing our Gratitude
As we look toward the end of the year, I'd love to encourage all of us to find meaningful ways to thank and honor the many people who serve on our church staff teams.
Let's appreciate:
- The person at the front desk who welcomes people and answers the phone with patience and compassion.
- The facilities team who keeps the building clean, the sidewalks shoveled and the heat or air conditioning running.
- The children's and student ministry leaders who notice when a child or teenager needs extra support - and work tirelessly to equip volunteers to lead well.
- The administrator who checks the budget, pays the bills and quietly keeps countless details moving.
- The communications leader who gathers stories, creates graphics, updates the website and sends the weekly email.
And this list could go on and on.
These women and men bring various gifts, training, experiences and job titles to their work. And all of them have the opportunity to serve Jesus and His church through the work they're called to do.
In the coming weeks, will you look for opportunities to honor the many faithful people serving on your church staff? Let's encourage them. Thank them. Celebrate them.
