We often talk with churches about the need for guidelines around social media. The reason it's important is not only because it helps give you a framework for what to post, but more importantly, it helps solidify or, in some situations, create your online engagement and social media strategy. These guidelines could be given to your communications team members, other staff members and/or your social media volunteers during training.

Your church might need social media guidelines if ...

1. You have more than one person managing your main church social media account.
2. Individual ministries are managing/posting on their own social media accounts.
3. You have more than five social media accounts at your church.
4. You've recently undergone a new strategic process for your website or specifically your online engagement.
5. You've recently started using a new social media platform for the first time.
6. You are new in your role as a communications director or social media manager.
7. You are wanting to put more of an emphasis on engagement.
8. You have volunteers managing social media accounts or posting on social media.
9. You feel like you want to give up on social media all together.
10. You have a hunch that one social media platform is working much better than the other, and you think it might be time to consolidate or delete.
