This Christmas, embrace joy in the chaos! Explore tips for finding fun and navigating this season with a light heart.

What if we find the fun this Christmas? My family has a motto (well, to be fair, we have a lot of mottos, values, quirky phrases, etc.—that’s what happens when mom is a creative communicator). Anywho … one of the mottos we live by is "find the fun."

In essence, it reminds us that even in stressful moments, or when things just aren’t going the way we hoped, there’s always a way to find some joy. And, in my opinion, finding the fun is often the best way through a tough situation.

So it got me thinking …

What would it look like if you committed to finding the fun this Christmas season?

Before we go further, I want to pause and acknowledge something that doesn’t get talked about enough: it’s okay if Christmas doesn’t feel "fun" to you.

While many other industries slow down to make space for the beauty of the season, you’re speeding up. You’re spending less time at home and "on" more. You’re carrying the weight of helping others connect with the Christmas story which is big. It’s okay to let your Scrooge out a little bit.

But what if ... alongside the weight of this season (and maybe a touch of Scrooge-ness) ... we left a little room for joy?

After all, in Luke 2, "the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.'"

Can you read it again? Great joy for all people. That includes you, my friend.

We often think of that verse as a reminder that the joy of Jesus is for everyone — our neighbors, our family, even our enemies. But don’t forget: the joy of Jesus is for you, too.

So, as a self-proclaimed fun-finder (yes, that’s a real thing), here are my top three tips for finding the fun this Christmas season:

1. Linger a Little Longer

Over dinner with your family. As you sip coffee in the morning and look out at the snow. (Or palm trees? Wherever you find yourself located this holiday season!). While you chat with your kids about their day in the pickup line. With your staff. As you read the Word. Just linger.

Give yourself permission to take a breath. Notice something you haven’t before. Appreciate the beauty right where you are.

2. Decorate a Gingerbread House

Okay, this one might be a stretch for some of us, but have you ever actually decorated a gingerbread house? It’s so fun! (Hot tip: you can grab a kit at Target for around $15.)

You can do this with friends or family ... or, wait for it ... even by yourself! Let your imagination run wild. Get messy and creative. Have fun with it!

An activity like this opens your mind and reconnects you with that childlike wonder that’s meant to be part of Christmas. And honestly, I think childlike wonder and play is a gift from Jesus that He wants us to enjoy, but that's for another time …

3. Go to One Non-Obligatory Event (or Don’t)

I know your schedule is packed this time of year, so this one’s a "choose your own adventure."

Go to one event that isn’t out of obligation. Go because it might bring a little extra joy or magic into your life. Wear that hideous Christmas sweater (you know, the one with the battery pack that gets glitter everywhere). Have a second cup of cocoa with friends.

Or … don’t.

Instead, say "no" to something that doesn’t fill your bucket. How might saying no free up space to find a little extra fun somewhere else in your day?

Find the Fun this Christmas Season

There are countless ways to find joy this season, but that’s the beauty of a "find the fun" mindset ... fun is subjective. If it’s fun to you, then it’s fun! End of story!

Church leader, we are so grateful for you. The work you’re doing this season (and every season) matters so, so much. And so do you.

As you pray and plan to make this Christmas one to remember for your church, your community, your family and your friends ... don’t forget yourself. The good news of great joy is for you, too.

We are talking about Abiding in Christ this Christmas. Maybe finding fun is one way we can abide ... by resting in joy, even when life is busy.

Remember that delight isn’t a distraction from Jesus; it’s a reflection of Him.

"Lord, remind us that your joy is for us, too. Help us find the fun, rest in your presence and abide in your love this Christmas."

I wish you a fun-filled Christmas!
