Reflecting on 20 years at Fishhook, Leah shares her principles for leading with love, joy and generosity
After 20 years of learning, growing and leading alongside others at Fishhook, I continue to be shaped and inspired. As I reflect, I’m sharing my thoughts here in the hope of encouraging others - and I’d love to hear your insights, too!
For me, loving, leading and inspiring a team is a daily, intentional commitment. I hope you feel the same!
Here are a few of my guiding priorities in leading at Fishhook:
1. Live our Values
I want to be the biggest champion, defender and an active participant in living out our Fishhook values. These values are more than words; they guide our decisions, shape our culture, and reflect how we live and work. (You can read more about our values here.)
2. Love Our People
Ahead of the work comes care for our people. I want to know and love each team member. I want to know their families, pets and stories. That means praying for them regularly, sending encouragement, celebrating milestones, and showing up with care.
I often ask: How are you? How is your family? How can I pray for you in this season? - and these questions are genuine.
3. Prioritize the Mission - And Make Space for Joy and Fun
Our mission to serve churches and to do great work are the focus - it's why we exist! But we surround that focus with a ton of laughter, silliness, curiosity, spontaneity, creativity, learning and care.
What does this look like? We look for reasons to go get coffee or bring in pie, ask people how they are and pause to pray or celebrate, use playdough or crayons in a meeting, take a field trip, ask unexpected questions, and try new things in every area of our work.
4. Spot the Spark, Fan the Flame
I love seeing potential in others - their creativity, leadership and insight - and giving them the freedom and responsibility to run with it. That might mean asking someone to lead a project, facilitate a meeting, or step into a new role.
Empowering others to grow into who they’re becoming is one of the best parts of leadership.
5. Lead with Abundance and Generosity
God is faithful. His resources are infinite, and His ways are beyond ours. I want to lead from a posture of abundance, not scarcity - knowing that God is always at work and will provide what’s needed. That means offering grace, encouragement, opportunity and hope to our team as we pursue this meaningful ministry together.
What about you?
In your leadership, what are your priorities or guiding principles? I’d love to hear what’s working for you or what you're learning.
Let’s keep cheering each other on!
